Stored Value or Prepaid Cards
A Stored Value, also known as Prepaid, card is a plastic, magnetic stripe card issued by a bank .There are two types of Stored Value cards: Open Loop and Closed Loop. The "Open Loop" cards are branded according to association, such as VISA® or MasterCard®, and may be used for purchasing where the association brand (i.e., VISA®) is approved. Gift certificates, payroll cards, and teen cards are some examples of open loop stored value cards. The other type, the "Closed loop" stored value cards, are issued by a specific retailer or retail group (i.e., a shopping center) and explicitly allow for purchase only at the issuer. At times, the Stored Value Card imprints only the customer's account number, and makes use of encrypted communications and electronic banking protocols inorder to enhance security for both the consumer and the retailer.
